GBD: Global Burden of Disease Collaboration

The Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) is described as the most comprehensive worldwide observational epidemiological study to date and describes mortality and morbidity from major diseases, injuries and risk factors to health at a global, national and regional level. By examining trends from 1990 to present and comparing populations across the globe, significant advances are made in understandings of the changing health challenges facing people globally in the 21st century. The Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) is a comprehensive regional and global research program of disease burden that assesses mortality and disability from major diseases, injuries and risk factors across countries and regions. GBD is a collaboration of over 1,800 researchers from 127 countries, led by principal investigator Christopher J.L. Murray, Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington. The GBD is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and has described mortality and morbidity from major diseases, injuries and risk factors to health at global, national and regional levels. The aim of GBD is to produce annual estimates of mortality, cause of death, incidence, prevalence and duration of illness/disability for >300 causes of global health relevance, and for approx. 3000 disabling conditions. Estimations of the comparative of disease and injury burden attributable to major risk factors such as tobacco, alcohol, high blood pressure, environment and diet are also provided. Annual estimates of the above variables are produced for 195 countries. Please see the Lancet webpage for further information:
