Current PhD Students

  1. Lyndon Hawke is a physiotherapist with almost 20 years’ experience in community rehabilitation at Eastern Health. Lyndon has a special interest in research at the community/healthcare provision interface and is investigating methods of increasing physical activity levels after hip or knee joint replacement.
  2. Kellie Emmerson is an occupational therapist with a special interest in neurological rehabilitation and the use of technology to enhance rehabilitation tools. Her PhD research explores the use of smart technology for home exercise programs in relation to patient outcomes, satisfaction, and cost efficiency.
  3. Anna Joy is a clinical leader in Occupational Therapy at Eastern Health. Her PhD research is focusing on methods to translate of research findings into practice to improve rehabilitation outcomes after stroke.

Recent Alumni

  1. David Snowdon (PhD, completed 2018). David completed his PhD in the Allied Health Clinical Research Office in 2018, investigating the effectiveness of clinical supervision of allied health professionals. He continues to collaborate with the Eastern Health AHCRO on a range of projects from his new role in Allied Health Research & Translation at Peninsula Health.
  2. Jason Wallis (PhD, completed 2018). Jason is physiotherapist with a special interest in improving health outcomes for patients with hip and knee osteoarthritis. After many years with the Osteoarthritis Hip and Knee Service (OAHKS) at Box Hill and Maroondah Hospitals , Jason is now a research fellow with the Department  of Clinical Epidemiology, Monash University. Jason’s PhD research aimed to improve physical activity levels and cardiovascular health for people with severe knee osteoarthritis.
  3. Kylee Lockwood (PhD, completed 2018). Kylee is an occupational therapist whose PhD thesis investigated the effectiveness of occupational therapy pre-discharge home visits in reducing falls and preventing readmissions in patients with hip fracture. Kylee has strong ties with Eastern Health as a former clinician and manager of occupational therapy, and currently works as a lecturer at La Trobe University.
  4. Andrea Bruder (PhD, completed 2018). Andrea is a physiotherapist who has completed her research program into the role of exercise in restoring arm function after distal radial fracture at Eastern Health. Her findings question the effectiveness of exercise prescription in its current form for these patients.   She is working as a lecturer at La Trobe University.
  5. Kate Lawler (PhD, completed 2019). Kate completed her PhD in the field of involving family caregivers in providing therapy for older people in transition care settings while a senior physiotherapist at Eastern Health. She is now a lecturer in the Wicking Dementia Institute and Education Centre at the University of Tasmania.
