The team behind the COSMOS trial receive La Trobe University's 'Excellence in Health Research and Translation Award'.

Congratulations to COSMOS

We offer our congratulations to the COSMOS team, and all the shortlisted nominees. The COSMOS project is one of two teams from ARCH partner Institutions that were nominated for the awards. The COSMOS team received the trophy and cash prize at a ceremony attended by industry leaders, politicians and academics from La Trobe and other Universities. The project was praised for having had significant national and international success at implementing one of the few methods shown to reduce the “epidemic of caesareans” that a recent Lancet review highlighted.

The COSMOS trial, published in 2012, showed caseload midwifery reduced the caesarean rate by 22%. A video giving a snapshot of the research and the process of translating the original trial to its current level of worldwide impact is available.

The award, in its inaugural year, seeks to acknowledge the tremendous amount of skill, effort and collaboration that is required in order for new knowledge to have a beneficial impact on the health and wellbeing of people in the real world.

Dr Norman Swan, of the ABC Radio National Health Report show was the master of ceremonies and praised the project. Professor Rob Pike, Pro Vice-Chancellor, College of Science, Health and Engineering (SHE) presented the award to the teams representative Professor Helen McLachlan, who accepted on behalf of the whole team.
The ceremony took place on the evening of Wednesday 20 March, at the Glasshouse venue in Melbourne’s Olympic park district.
